Russia Offers to Remove Remaining Enriched Uranium from Iran

(MENAFN) Russia has expressed willingness to remove Iran’s remaining enriched uranium, a Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman said Wednesday.

Maria Zakharova stated, "At the same time, it is important to note that the aforementioned stockpiles belong to Iran. Their presence in no way contradicts Tehran’s obligations under the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons." She added that Iran has full authority over the material, including decisions regarding its removal from Iranian territory and export.

The announcement comes amid ongoing international efforts to manage tensions between Tehran and Washington. In recent weeks, the United States deployed additional air defense systems, including Patriot and THAAD batteries, to bases across the Middle East and sent a naval task force led by the USS Abraham Lincoln to the Arabian Sea.

Washington has indicated that while the immediate risk of military action has lessened, it remains prepared to respond if necessary. Key US demands include limiting Iran’s uranium enrichment and restricting its ballistic missile program, while Iran continues to assert that its nuclear activities are solely for peaceful purposes.

Reports suggest that diplomacy has gained renewed momentum after intensive mediation efforts led by Russia, Türkiye, and Qatar, reducing the likelihood of an immediate US strike.
